Description

From the series Modern Parodies of Genji Imayo nazorae Genji, 1864 Dynamic reinterpretation of classical Genji imagery, blending literary allusion with heroic warrior themes. Depicts the legendary figures Minamoto no Yoshitsune and the warrior monk Musashibō Benkei. Utagawa Yoshiiku, a pupil of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, was celebrated for his theatrical warrior prints and historical subjects, evident here in the expressive poses and elaborate costume detailing. Combining literary allusion with bold decorative design, the work reflects the continued fascination with samurai legend and kabuki-inspired imagery in 19th-century.
